Powers & Company, Inc. has been instrumental in the rehabilitation of the Hajoca Building, situated on the northeast corner of Walnut and 31st streets in West Philadelphia, for its reuse as the new World Cafe studios and headquarters for WXPN offices and radio station.
The Hajoca Corporation Headquarters and Showroom Building served as the headquarters for Hajoca, an important Philadelphia plumbing supply manufacturing and distributing company for three decades in the early to mid twentieth century. Designed by Clarence Wunder, a notable Philadelphia architect of commercial buildings, the Hajoca Corporation Headquarters and Showroom Building contains the features and details representative of commercial Art Deco architecture of the period. The building is significant for its association with an important manufacturer and distributor of plumbing supplies and as a locally significant example of Art Deco commercial architecture and a representative work of Clarence Wunder.
In the proposed project, the building is being rehabilitated to accommodate the WXPN radio studio with associated offices, the World Cafe and the headquarters for the WXPN offices. The existing 1st floor at grade will be renovated for radio and performance studios, offices, kitchen and bar. A new mezzanine will be constructed in the approximate location of an original mezzanine. That mezzanine will house a lobby and café seating area. The existing 2nd floor will become the 3rd floor with the construction of the mezzanine. That floor will accommodate the café, offices, conference rooms, and a future office/retail space.
